Chip security you can rely on
Heritage Visa cards are now more secure than ever before, thanks to the introduction of chip technology. A chip card contains an embedded microcomputer chip that stores and processes data.
The chip is difficult to copy, because some of the data necessary for counterfeiting is difficult to replicate from the genuine chip.
Chip cards, when used in conjunction with your Personal Identification Number (PIN) are a safe solution that discourages counterfeit and lost or stolen card fraud. The chip makes replication of the card difficult and the PIN uniquely identifies the owner of the card and prevents the card from being used by someone else without the PIN if lost or stolen.
Rest assured, your chip card does not hold any personal information about you or any additional cardholders.
Some businesses are already using chip-ready card terminals and your card will be inserted into the terminal and remain there for the duration of the transaction.
You should be aware that chip cards and PINs do not reduce the risk of fraudulent use of cards to purchase goods and services using the internet or over the phone. You must keep your card secure and you PIN secret to help prevent fraud.
Pen or Pin
Currently, when you use your Visa card to pay for something at a shop you press ‘credit’, and sign to accept the transaction. From 4 June 2008, participating shops in Australia will be able to accept a Personal Identification Number (PIN), giving you an alternative. Of course, you can continue to sign as you’ve always done.
